There are many ways to find information about where to get the best meal when traveling. The most reliable method I’ve found is to ask the people who live there.
Locals aren’t easily fooled by fancy storefronts, excessive marketing or in-your-face locations. They won’t be thrown off by a single sub-par experience or a Trip Advisor comment from a grumpy one-timer. They know where to find the best values, the most consistent service, and they’ve tried more than one or two items on the menu.
So where do the folks who live in and around Springdale like to eat? Most locals will tell you that all of the food near the park tends to be very good. There aren’t any chain-restaurants here (They are not allowed). Each establishment has its own unique personality, and their entire reputation relies upon one location. If they aren’t good, they don’t last very long here. But when you ask residents to list their favorites, one name will come up almost every time: Oscar’s Cafe.
Oscar’s isn’t hard to find, but it’s not the first place you’ll see when looking for food. It’s slightly off the main road by the Shell Station, on the left side as you head through town on the way to Zion. Look for a small line of “happy-to-wait” customers, and chances are, you’re very close.
Once you find it, you’ll remember how to get there, and you’ll want to come back. Oscars isn’t just a place to get a meal — it’s a complete experience that is uniquely Springdale. Most of the dining is outdoors, so you’re always within view of the spectacular scenery of Zion Canyon. The seating is covered with a permanent shade awning, and it’s surrounded by trees which provide welcome relief from the summer’s heat. An occasional sparrow may land nearby to eagerly “clean-up” under a recently vacated table. Oscars is the perfect blend of nature and comfort. It’s outdoor dining at its best.
The lunch and dinner menu consists of southwestern cuisine like fish tacos, enchiladas, and burritos, along with a great variety of fresh salads, sandwiches, wraps, and a choice of gourmet hamburgers which are quite possibly the best in the country. Steaks, ribs and other american favorites are also featured. The portions are large and the food is amazing, so you might have to take dessert with you for later. I have to admit that I’ve never quite made it that far, but if the carrot cake or sundaes are as good as the hamburgers and fish tacos, they won’t disappoint.
Although it’s not uncommon to have to wait a few minutes to be seated at Oscar’s, the service is prompt and the line moves quickly. And if it does take more than a few minutes to get in, you’ll be glad you waited.
For breakfast, lunch or dinner, if you are anywhere near Springdale and you haven’t experienced a great meal, don’t blame Oscar’s!
